Surgery verses Chiropractic or Acupuncture is It Possible to Avoid Surgery?

Any surgery is a risk and a big stress for your body. And you can also add to this a recovery time, missed work time, and high costs. Sometimes you can get complications and surgery will not solve your problem. Should you do conservative treatments and avoid surgery?

Several years ago, Dr. Saal, a leading spine specialist with the San Francisco Spine Institute, published a three-year study that concluded that half of the 250,000 lower-back operations in the United States every year are unnecessary, hence detrimental to the long-term health of the patient and the healthcare system.

Today Dr. Marr wants to share some of his cases when chiropractic care combined with acupuncture and physical therapy helped to avoid surgeries.

Case Studies - Avoiding Spinal Surgery

Case 1 Lower back pain which radiates across the left buttocks and down the left leg.

Spinal disc surgery was recommended however patient was trying to avoid surgery. Patient was treated with acupuncture, ultrasound, and spinal manipulation. Patient fully recovered and was completely asymptomatic.

Case 2 Lower back pain which radiates across the right buttocks.

Patient was treated with traction, electrical muscle stimulation, hot moist packs, and spinal manipulation. Surgery had been recommended and this patient was referred in by a family member. Patient fully recovered and was pain-free. Patient placed on a maintenance program to prevent symptoms from reoccurring.

Case 3 Neck pain which radiates down the right arm to their fingertips.

They also experienced numbness and burning down the right arm. Surgery was recommended and patient was referred by a friend for acupuncture. Patient was treated with acupuncture. The numbness and burning subsided and the neck pain became very infrequent. Patient was placed on a maintenance program of one treatment per month and surgery was prevented.

Case 4 Upper back pain which radiates down the upper left arm.

Surgery was recommended. Patient treated with acupuncture and spinal manipulation. Patient became 90% pain-free and was placed on a maintenance program of one treatment per month. Surgery was prevented.

Case 5 Numbness, burning, and pain in left and right lower legs due to neuropathy.

Patient was treated with acupuncture and achieved 90% relief. The patient was placed on a maintenance program of once per month.

CONCLUSION Conservative care should be considered prior to surgery in the majority of spinal surgery cases. A consultation with Dr. Marr will provide you with useful information about possible treatment, which may prevent unnecessary surgery and return you to your normal activities of daily living enjoying life.

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment method that assists the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. This procedure is done by inserting very thin needles at precise acupuncture points. Heat and Electrical stimulation may also be applied over the needles to increase the effects of the acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture can also be done without needles  using the heat and electrical methods.
How does Acupuncture work?

According to the ancient Chinese theory, channels of energy called meridians run in regular patterns throughout the entire body. Meridians flow like rivers through the body to nourish the tissues. However, a disturbance in the flow of this energy can back up in part of the body like a dam and restrict it from moving. The acupuncture treatment restores the proper movement of this energy and allows healing of the corrupted tissue.
