| The Chiropractic Lifestyle |
Chiropractors are experts in the care of the bones, nerves, muscles and connective tissues that make up about 60% of your body. All of the joints in your body are part of this musculo-skeletal system and its optimal function is necessary for overall good health. Ask your Doctor of Chiropractic for more information about a care program that may include specific spinal adjustments, exercise recommendations, nutritional advice or other conservative methods of care based on your health history, age, current condition and lifestyle. |

The anatomical focus of Doctor of Chiropractic on the human spine has created the perception of the Doctor of Chiropractic as just a "back doctor." Although this perception is not entirely incorrect, it is very much incomplete. | Subluxation, How Dangerous are they? |
Anyone who has been a patient of ours has probably heard the term "subluxation". This is not, however, a word that most people understand or comprehend. When you hear the word "cancer", there is an instant vision of a very serious and possibly life threatening disease. When you hear the word "AIDS", you think of a terminal condition with a person suffering with no hope of survival. But what do you think of when you hear the word "subluxation"? If you are like many people, you probably have trouble even pronouncing the word. Then after you think about it, you probably still do not know just what to think. The fact is that most people do not have even the slightest idea of just what a subluxation is or how dangerous it can be. |
|

|
|
A few generations ago, the people of that time probably never heard the word "cavity". But more than likely they all knew of the end results of cavities called "tooth aches". Only after years of public education by the dentists, did people come to understand just what a cavity really was. The same can be said for subluxations. Most people are very familiar with the end results of subluxations, but most of them do not realize that a subluxation had anything to do with that end result.
The reason it is easier to understand cavities rather than subluxations is because it is easier to see the end results of a cavity than the end results of a subluxation. Most people know that the end result of a cavity is a tooth ache or possibly even tooth loss. But with subluxations, a simple connection is not possible. This is due to the fact that a subluxation affects your nerve system function which is a much more complex situation than a cavity on a tooth. For this reason we often refer to subluxations as the fundamental underlying "cause" of your problems.
The difficult thing to understand is that subluxations, unlike cavities in your teeth, cause different problems in different people. In fact no two people with subluxation will have the same end results. It is also nearly impossible to predict what types of health problems a person will get from the subluxations they have. But one thing is for sure, subluxations will create a health problem somewhere, sometime If you look in any anatomy book to find out how the body functions, you will see an explanation like this; "The brain controls and coordinates all the functions of the body." This basically means that everything you do, everything your body does, whether you know about it or not is controlled by your brain.
The signals from your brain are transmitted over your nerves to every part of your body. In order for your body to function properly these signals from the brain must get to the various parts of your body without any interference, alteration, or change. If some form of interference does occur along the pathway from the brain to the body part, that part cannot function properly and some sort of health problem will result. It may not show up immediately, but eventually it shows up. The most common cause of interference to nerve signals is known as a subluxation.
A subluxation is when one or more of the bones in your spine move out of position and causes pressure or irritation on a nerve or nerves and therefore interferes with proper nerve messages. It is our job as chiropractors to find these subluxations and correct or reduce them as much as possible. So, "Subluxations, how dangerous are they?" Answer this for yourself by keeping in mind how important your nervous system is. Now ask yourself the question, "How important is it to my health to have my nervous system functioning without interference?" |
| A subluxation, or the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, is a serious condition identified by its five parts: |
| Abnormal motion or position of spinal bones: |
| (Spinal Kinesiopathology) The bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. This can restrict your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components. |
| Abnormal nervous system function: |
| (Neuropathophysiology) Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nervous system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body. |
| Abnormal muscle function: |
| (Myopathology) Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm. The resulting scar tissue can change muscle tone, requiring repeated spinal adjustments. |
| Abnormal soft tissue function: |
| (Histopathology) A rise in temperature from an increase in blood or lymph supply can result in swelling and inflammation. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear, or degenerate. Other soft tissues may suffer permanent damage. |
| Abnormal function of the spine and body: |
| (Pathophysiology) Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to fail. |

| Chiropractic Quick Facts |
|
It is the fastest-growing and second-largest primary health care profession. |
| |
There are approximately 60,000 doctors of chiropractic (DCs) in active practice in the United States spread from rural areas to inner cities. More than 10,000 students are currently enrolled in chiropractic educational programs accredited by a federally-recognized body (CCE). |
|
Chiropractic services are in high demand. |
| |
Tens of millions of Americans routinely opt for chiropractic services and this number is rapidly growing. In 1993, more than 30 million consumers made chiropractic a regular part of their health care program. |
|
Doctors of Chiropractic receive extensive, demanding professional education on par with medical doctors (MDs) and osteopaths (DOs). |
| |
To receive the doctor of chiropractic degree, candidates must complete extensive undergraduate prerequisites and four years of graduate-level instruction and internship at an accredited chiropractic institution. Comprehensive knowledge of all systems of the body and diagnostic procedures enable the DC to thoroughly evaluate a patient, address disorders relating to the spine and determine the need for referral to another health care provider. |
|
Doctors of Chiropractic are primary health care providers. |
| |
According to the Center for Studies in Health Policy, "The DC can provide all three levels of primary care interventions and therefore is a primary care provider, as are MDs and DOs. The doctor of chiropractic is a gatekeeper to the health care system and an independent practitioner who provides primary care services. The DC's office is a direct access portal of entry to the full scope of service." |
|
Doctors of Chiropractic are licensed in all 50 states in the US. |
| |
DCs have been licensed and recognized for many decades in all states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. |
|
Chiropractic is recognized by governmental health care programs. |
| |
Chiropractic is included in Medicare, Medicaid, Federal Employees Health Care Benefits Programs, Federal Workers' Compensation and all state workers' compensation programs. Chiropractic students are qualified to receive federal student loan assistance and DCs are authorized to be commissioned as health care officers in the U.S. Armed Forces. |

The practice of chiropractic is based on sound scientific principles. |
| |
The existence of the nervous system as the primary control mechanism of the body is an undisputed scientific fact. Its relationship with the spine is the focus of the practice of chiropractic. The spine develops in utero to provide two primary functions: - (1) allow for freedom of movement
- (2) house and protect the spinal cord.
When the vertebrae of the spine become misaligned through trauma or repetitive injury, two major consequences will result: - (1) the range of motion becomes limited
- (2) spinal nerves emerging from the spinal cord are compromised.
DC's use the term "subluxation" to describe such disruptions. Interruption of nerve flow can eventually lead to pain, disability, and an overall decrease in the quality of life. Conversely, the removal of that interference has been shown to have significant, lasting health benefits. Through the adjustment of the subluxation, the doctor of chiropractic endeavors to restore normal nerve expression. The body is then able to respond appropriately to any imbalance in the system, thus relieving symptoms and restoring health. |

Doctors of chiropractic provide effective, low-cost health care for a wide range of conditions. |
| |
Studies conducted according to the highest scientific standards and published by organizations not affiliated in any way with chiropractic institutions or associations continue to show the clinical appropriateness and effectiveness of chiropractic care. One of the most recent, funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health, stated emphatically that:
"On the evidence, particularly the most scientifically valid clinical studies, spinal manipulation applied by chiropractors is shown to be more effective than alternative treatments for low back pain. There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of low back pain was transferred from physician to chiropractors." |

The anatomical focus of the DC on the human spine has created the perception of the DC as just a "back doctor." Although this perception is not entirely incorrect, it is very much incomplete. Doctors of chiropractic are a highly appropriate resource in matters of work-place safety, stress management, injury prevention, postural correction and nutritional counseling." |
|
The process of chiropractic adjustment is a safe, efficient procedure which is performed nearly one million times every working day in the United States. |
| |
There is a singular lack of actuarial data that would justify concluding that chiropractic care is in any way harmful or dangerous. Chiropractic care is non-invasive, therefore, the body's response to chiropractic care is far more predictable than its reactions to drug treatments or surgical procedures. Of the nearly one million adjustments given every day in this country, complications are exceedingly rare. Perhaps the best summary statement on the subject of safety was published in 1979 by the Government of New Zealand which established a special commission to study chiropractic. They found:
"The conspicuous lack of evidence that chiropractors cause harm or allow harm to occur through neglect of medical referral can be taken to mean only one thing: that chiropractors have on the whole an impressive safety record." |
